Biotin Tablets for Hair: Do They Work, Dose and Side Effects

Illustration of a woman in a pharmacy supplements aisle examining a bottle labelled BIOTIN 10,000 mcg, with shelves of vitamin bottles beside her
10,000 mcg is 10 mg, about 250 times the 40 micrograms a day Indian intake recommendations set. That much treats a deficiency; it has not been shown to regrow hair in people who do not have one.

Biotin tablets are sold in India at 5 mg and 10 mg, which is 125 to 250 times the 40 micrograms a day that the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommendations set as the intake for adults.1 They treat biotin deficiency, and that is what has been shown. Convincing evidence that they improve everyday hair loss in adults who are not deficient has not been produced. A systematic review published in May 2026 found ten human studies and reported that biotin on its own showed no consistent benefit on measured hair growth.2 The single placebo-controlled trial of biotin alone dates from 1966: 28 women on 10 mg a day, 18 on a placebo, four weeks, both groups improved, no difference between them.3 High-dose tablets can also skew some blood tests.4 Absence of convincing evidence isn't proof of zero effect. This page keeps that distinction where it belongs, which is in every sentence that follows, including the ones about safety.

The short version

  • Biotin tablets correct a biotin deficiency. In adults whose levels are normal, biotin alone has not been shown to grow hair; the studies that report benefit used plant extracts or combinations that cannot isolate biotin's effect.4,2
  • The Indian recommended intake is 40 micrograms a day. A single cooked egg gives 10. One 10 mg tablet gives 10,000.1,4
  • No upper limit has been set for biotin. That is not proof that every dose or product is safe for every person; what is documented is that 5 mg and higher can make thyroid, troponin and vitamin D results read falsely high or low.4,5
  • Before any blood test, tell your doctor and the laboratory your biotin dose and when you last took it. How long to pause depends on the dose and the test; there is no single interval that fits everyone.5

Do biotin tablets work for hair? Copy link

Biotin tablets work for hair loss caused by a biotin shortage, and that is the whole of what has been shown. A 2017 systematic search of the medical literature found 18 published cases of hair or nail improvement on biotin. Every one of those people had an underlying reason for the problem: an inherited defect in biotin handling, poor absorption, or a rare hair-shaft disorder in a child.6 A 2024 review went looking for anything better and found three eligible studies. The 1966 trial above showed no difference from placebo. The other two looked at narrow groups, people on isotretinoin and women after weight-loss surgery; both were unblinded, both small, and neither produced a clear result in biotin's favor.3 The 2026 systematic review widened the net to ten studies and reached the same place: where improvements were reported, they came from combined regimens and could not be attributed to biotin.2

So does biotin regrow hair, does biotin make hair grow faster, or does biotin help hair growth at all in someone who isn't short of it? Not on the evidence available. In 2024, ten healthy men in Brazil took 5 mg of oral biotin a day for two weeks, then topical minoxidil, then both, in a randomized order, with hair growth measured on a shaved patch. Biotin on its own changed nothing measurable. Minoxidil did. The combination behaved like minoxidil alone.7 The study was open-label and tiny, and each treatment period lasted only 14 days, so it cannot exclude a smaller effect over months. What it does show is that 5 mg of biotin, the strength many Indian tablets contain, did not measurably speed hair growth in that short experimental window. No controlled study of plain biotin on its own has shown that it makes hair grow faster or thicker in adults whose biotin is sufficient. The biotin tablets benefits printed on a bottle rest on deficiency cases, and on the plausible-sounding but unestablished idea that more biotin means more keratin.

The reason that idea persists is a fair one: biotin deficiency really does cause hair to thin, sometimes to the point of losing all body hair.4 But evidence that correcting a deficiency helps does not mean progressively larger doses produce progressively more hair. That second claim has to be demonstrated in trials, and so far it has not been.2

Have you noticed the hair felt thicker a month into a course? Some people do report it. In the weight-loss-surgery study, 23 percent of the biotin-deficient women said their hair improved on 1 mg a day. So did 38 percent of the women whose biotin was normal.3 As you'd expect from a study that relied on how people felt their hair was doing, nobody counted the hairs, and a shed that is ending on its own looks like a supplement working.

This is an editorial evidence summary, built from the two published reviews and the primary papers they cite, checked on 8 September 2026. It is not a systematic review of our own. Hair growth, shedding, shaft thickness and nail outcomes are kept separate on purpose, because a product that thickens nails has not thereby been shown to regrow hair.

What biotin does, and what is biotin good for? Copy link

Biotin is vitamin B7, also called vitamin H. A biotin tablet is simply that vitamin pressed into a pill at a dose far above what food supplies. In your body it works as a helper for five enzymes that handle fats, glucose and amino acids.4 Biotin deficiency can affect hair and nails, which is why the vitamin became attached to those tissues in the public mind. That does not mean extra biotin increases keratin production or hair growth once intake is adequate; no such pathway has been established. It is present in eggs, liver, fish, nuts, seeds, sweet potato and milk. Severe biotin deficiency has never been reported in a healthy person eating an ordinary mixed diet.4

The biotin name on a label may read vitamin B7, vitamin H or, in older chemistry, coenzyme R; biotin is also known by all three, and they are the same molecule. The biotin tablets uses that have evidence behind them are narrower than the label suggests. Newborns found to have biotinidase deficiency, a rare inherited disorder, take biotin for life and are screened for it at birth in many countries.4 People on long-term anti-seizure drugs run lower biotin levels. In one study of 264 people with epilepsy, a year or more on carbamazepine, phenytoin or phenobarbital was linked to significantly lower serum biotin.4 Brittle, splitting nails have been treated with 2.5 mg a day in three small studies. One measured a 25 percent increase in nail thickness in eight patients. None of the three had a placebo group, so read them as promising and unproven.4,11 For skin, the evidence is a handful of infant case reports. Adult hair in an otherwise healthy person is not on the list. Nowhere on it.

How much biotin per day is recommended? Copy link

The ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended intake for an Indian adult is 40 micrograms a day, 45 while breastfeeding.1 People search for a biotin daily requirement, but no true requirement has been derived for biotin; figures like this are adequate-intake estimates from what healthy people eat, which is also how the US arrives at its 30 micrograms.4 So the biotin daily dose for adults, in the nutritional sense, is 30 to 40 micrograms from food. It is not a treatment dose, and no treatment dose for hair has been defined. One cooked egg gives you 10, a quarter cup of roasted almonds 1.5, half a cup of cooked sweet potato 2.4. Intake surveys in Western populations find 35 to 70 micrograms a day from ordinary food.4 The tablets sold for hair contain 5,000 or 10,000 micrograms. Look at the strip in your hand. 10 mg is 10,000 mcg, and the two spellings are the same dose.

Four eggs represent the Indian recommended adult intake of 40 micrograms. One sculpted 10 mg tablet contains 10,000 micrograms, equivalent to the biotin in 1,000 eggs and 250 times the Indian adult intake. Is 10,000 mcg of biotin too much, then? No tolerable upper intake level has been set, because no toxic dose has been identified in humans. Studies of 10 to 50 mg a day found no adverse effects, and people with biotinidase deficiency take up to 200 mg daily without symptoms.4 That is not the same as proof that every dose or every product is safe for every person; it means harm has not been found where it has been looked for. Oral biotin is absorbed completely, even at 20 mg, and is cleared mainly through the kidneys.4 After a high dose, though, blood levels can stay high enough to disturb susceptible assays for many hours; in one pharmacokinetic study it took about 20 hours after a 10 mg dose.5 What a 10 mg tablet does do, and this is documented, is push your blood level high enough to interfere with laboratory tests. In practice that is the risk that matters, and it gets its own section below.

There is a regulatory footnote here. Under the FSSAI's nutraceutical regulations, a health supplement in India may not contain more than one ICMR recommended daily allowance of a vitamin.12 A 40-microgram biotin supplement fits that rule; a 10,000-microgram dose is far above the one-RDA ceiling that framework specifies for vitamins. The category or licence under which a particular high-strength product is marketed has to be checked from that product's own regulatory information, and strength alone does not tell you.

Are people with hair fall actually low in biotin? Copy link

Some may be, and this is where a flat "biotin doesn't work" becomes too simple. Worth saying plainly: the question has been measured, and the answer is untidy. A Swiss hair clinic measured serum biotin in 541 women who came in with hair loss over one year. Levels fell below its cut-off in 38 percent of them, most with no obvious risk factor.8 The study was retrospective and from a single clinic. It used a stricter cut-off than the standard definition of deficiency and had no control group of women without hair loss, so it cannot tell you how common low biotin is in women generally. When researchers in Turkey did add a control group, measuring both serum and urine biotin in 90 women with chronic telogen effluvium and 90 controls, they found no difference.10 A study of 60 men with pattern baldness found lower levels than controls, but no one who was actually deficient.3

Read together, those results say something useful. Low biotin turns up in some people who seek help for hair loss, its clinical meaning is uncertain, and it cannot be seen from the outside. It also cannot be settled by a routine blood test. Serum biotin swings by up to 100 percent through the day and doesn't fall reliably in mild deficiency; urine metabolites are the better marker, and those are not tests you will find on a routine panel.4,8 Your risk of running low is higher if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, drink heavily, take valproate or an older anti-seizure drug, eat raw egg whites regularly, or have had bowel surgery.4,3 In those situations the sensible step is an individual assessment with a doctor who knows the rest of your history, and biotin may be part of what follows. Outside those recognized risk groups, clinically meaningful deficiency appears uncommon, and the hair-loss studies above do not give a reliable prevalence for the general Indian population, so nobody can put a number on your odds.

Iron status is another consideration in Indian patients with diffuse shedding, particularly when the history suggests iron deficiency, and here a population number is useful context and nothing more. NFHS-5 found 57 percent of Indian women aged 15 to 49 anemic, and 25 percent of men; anemia has nutritional and non-nutritional causes, and a national prevalence says nothing about why your hair is shedding.13 What a doctor does is take a history and examine the scalp first, then choose tests to match, and the tests follow the pattern of shedding, not a fixed panel. A blood count and ferritin make sense when iron deficiency is plausible; thyroid testing when symptoms or the pattern raise it; B12, vitamin D, zinc and others when the diet, history or examination make them relevant. The Turkish study that found no biotin difference in chronic shedding also found no difference in hemoglobin, ferritin, B12, thyroid tests or vitamin D, only in zinc, which is a reminder that a panel ordered blind often comes back normal.10 Correcting a low result does not guarantee regrowth; it removes one cause. Biotin's position is different: routine serum testing is unreliable, and the treatment, biotin itself, only helps when a deficiency is real. If your shedding came on in handfuls a few months after an illness, a fever or a crash diet, the pattern to read about is telogen effluvium. If the thinning is slow and follows a shape, it is usually pattern hair loss: for men, see male pattern baldness and the Norwood stages; for women, female pattern hair loss. Thyroid disease is the one cause that both sheds hair and can hide behind a biotin tablet, as the next section explains. How it thins hair in the first place is covered in thyroid and hair loss.

Biotin tablets side effects, and the blood-test problem Copy link

The best-established safety problem with high-dose biotin is not a side effect you will feel. It is interference with laboratory tests, and it happens on your results sheet. Very high biotin in your blood interferes with laboratory tests that use biotin-streptavidin chemistry, and that chemistry sits inside many routine immunoassays: thyroid hormones, some troponin tests, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, ferritin, B12 and others, with the list varying by manufacturer.4,5 Depending on the design of the test, the result reads falsely high or falsely low.14 In six healthy adults who took 10 mg a day for one week, TSH came back falsely low, a pattern that would be read as an overactive thyroid.15 A single 10 mg dose has skewed thyroid results within 24 hours.16 Case reports describe people diagnosed with Graves' disease they did not have, one of whom came close to an unnecessary thyroid operation.3 And the US FDA has reported a death in which a troponin test, the test that diagnoses a heart attack, read falsely low on an assay susceptible to biotin.4,14

The dose decides it, and so does the test. Multivitamin amounts up to 1 mg have not been reported to interfere. The 5 to 10 mg in a hair tablet raises blood levels far enough to affect susceptible tests, and susceptibility differs from one assay and one manufacturer to the next.5 Biotin at microgram doses has a half-life of around two hours; at very high doses it stretches to nearly nineteen.5 Laboratory-medicine guidance is that people who have taken 5 to 10 mg should wait at least 8 hours before a blood draw, and that sensitive assays can need up to 72 hours. People on 100 mg or more should pause for 72 hours. Reduced kidney function prolongs all of this.5 The FDA itself has not set an interval, which is why this page does not give you a single number either.5

Biotin tablets and blood tests: biotin in serum at three daily doses, and the minimum pause before a blood draw laboratory guidance gives for eachThree glass serum tubes show biotin as spheres at daily doses of up to 1 mg, 10 mg, and 300 mg used in multiple-sclerosis research. Sphere density is schematic, not a measured concentration. TSH, troponin and vitamin D tests may read falsely high or low. Guidance: no interference reported for multivitamin doses up to 1 mg; after 5–10 mg, at least 8 hours, up to 72 hours for sensitive assays; 100 mg and above, at least 72 hours. Below, the minimum pause before a blood draw recommended in laboratory-medicine guidance for each dose band; the actual interval depends on the specific test and on kidney function, and the laboratory decides.5,4,14

What to do with that is simpler than the numbers suggest. Before a planned blood test, tell the clinician and the laboratory your biotin dose and when you last took it. Follow their instruction on whether and how long to pause. If biotin was prescribed, don't stop it without asking. In an emergency, never delay care to let biotin clear. Say the word "biotin" to the team, because a laboratory that knows about the exposure may be able to use a biotin-independent assay or another validated method to check the result, or ask for a repeat draw later.5

Why does this matter so much for hair? Because a thyroid test is one of the first things a doctor orders for hair fall, and a biotin tablet started for the same hair fall can make that test wrong in either direction. Biotin can distort TSH and thyroid-hormone measurements in ways that mimic an overactive thyroid or obscure a real thyroid problem, and either error sends the search for a cause in the wrong direction.5 The two habits collide in exactly the person most likely to have both.

Reported symptomatic biotin supplement side effects, the kind you feel, are uncommon in the available studies.4 Skin breakouts get blamed on biotin online, but the trials above did not record them, so treat that as anecdote. Biotin side effects are the same for female and male users at the same dose, with one addition for women. Prenatal vitamins already contain biotin, and high doses have interfered with some hormone assays and some hCG tests, including one of seven urine pregnancy-test devices in a laboratory study.17,5 Biotin hair gummies side effects are the same as a tablet's at the same biotin dose, interference included, because the interference comes from the biotin itself. Their other ingredients and sweeteners vary by product; read the label.

How to take biotin tablets, and when results show Copy link

If you decide to take one, follow the product label and, if a doctor recommended it, their instruction. Biotin is water-soluble and absorbed fully with or without food, so the best time to take biotin tablets is whichever time you will not forget.4 How to consume biotin tablets is equally simple: swallow whole with water, at the same time each day, and, before any blood test, tell the doctor and the lab your dose and last-dose time.

On results: hair grows in cycles, and a follicle that has shed will not show a visible new shaft for months, with the timing depending on what caused the shedding. A change you notice inside a few weeks cannot be attributed to a tablet, and a change you notice after months is not evidence for the tablet either, because sheds end on their own. In the brittle-nail studies, patients took 2.5 mg for six to fifteen months before improvement was measured.4 "Biotin results after one month" is a search people run because of what packaging implies; no study has measured such a thing in adults with normal biotin.

Which biotin tablets are best in India? Copy link

The best biotin tablet is the one that matches your reason for taking it. For most people that reason points to a low dose or no tablet at all, whatever the bottle on the pharmacy shelf promises about thickness and shine. Read the label before the brand name.

Strength first. A product carrying 30 to 60 micrograms adds roughly a day's worth of biotin on top of food and stays well below the levels that disturb blood tests.5 A 5 mg or 10 mg tablet does not add benefit for hair on current evidence and does add the lab problem. Biotin capsules (a prescription may read "Cap Biotin 10 mg") are the same dose in a softer shell.

Next, the combination. Many Indian products pair biotin with something else: biotin zinc tablets, biotin and folic acid tablets, or biotin multivitamin tablets sold as a hair vitamin with biotin. Judge each ingredient by its own evidence. Biotin and folic acid tablets, for instance, have uses in pregnancy that come from the folic acid, which has its own evidence base; the biotin in the pair works no harder at 5 mg than it does at 50 micrograms. Zinc, folate or another nutrient should be considered on its own merits when a clinically relevant deficiency is identified, and combining it with biotin does not establish a hair-growth benefit for the biotin. The Ahmedabad trial above used a plant extract with silica, and its results, whatever they eventually prove, do not transfer to a plain biotin tablet.9

So which biotin is best for hair, and what is the best biotin supplement? Searches for the best biotin tablets for hair growth in India assume a premise the trials do not support, so the answer splits three ways. If your biotin status is normal, there is no evidence-based reason to choose a 5 or 10 mg hair supplement. If biotin deficiency is suspected or confirmed, the dose depends on why it is low and should be chosen clinically. Biotinidase deficiency, for instance, is treated for life with milligram doses, and a multivitamin is no substitute for treating a real deficiency.4 If you simply want a nutritional supplement, staying near the recommended-intake quantities avoids the unnecessary high-dose exposure that comes with 5 to 10 mg products.

Last, price. On 8 September 2026, one large Indian online pharmacy listed a bottle of 60 tablets at 10,000 mcg with a printed price of 655 rupees and an offer price of 255.45.18 That works out to about four rupees a tablet at the discount and eleven at the printed price. That is a single dated observation, not a market survey; the biotin tablets price you see will vary by brand, strength, pack size and discount, and biotin capsules price is set the same way.

Biotin foods on an Indian plate Copy link

Whole eggs are the richest everyday source at 10 micrograms each, provided they are cooked. Raw egg white contains avidin, a protein that binds biotin so tightly your gut cannot absorb it; cooking destroys the avidin.4 If you want to know how to increase biotin level without a tablet, the answer is those biotin food sources, eaten regularly. After eggs, the measured biotin foods are modest. Roasted sunflower seeds give 2.6 micrograms per quarter cup, cooked sweet potato 2.4 per half cup, roasted almonds 1.5 per quarter cup, boiled spinach about half a microgram per half cup.4 Milk, curd and banana contribute a fraction of a microgram each. Liver is the outlier at over 30 micrograms in a small serving.4

Add the listed foods up honestly and two eggs plus seeds, sweet potato, almonds and dairy reach the high twenties, short of 40. Yet measured intakes in Western diets run 35 to 70 micrograms, because small amounts sit in many foods that were never measured for a table.4 Whether a typical Indian vegetarian day reaches 40 micrograms has not been measured, so this page will not claim it does. What has been shown is narrower and more useful: severe deficiency does not occur in healthy people on a normal mixed diet.4

Should you take biotin tablets at all? Copy link

You could, and on the evidence it will very probably do nothing either way for your hair if your biotin is normal, and severe deficiency has not been reported in otherwise healthy people eating a normal mixed diet.4 If you have no deficiency and no specific indication, there is no evidence-based reason to take a high-dose biotin tablet for hair. If you are taking 10 mg solely for hair growth despite having no known deficiency, continuing it for months is not supported by the available evidence. The more useful next step is finding out what is actually driving the shedding.

For pattern hair loss, the treatments with placebo-controlled evidence are topical minoxidil 5% and, for men, oral finasteride; for a temporary shed, time and the right assessment do most of the work. If you prefer something you apply instead of swallow, the evidence behind hair serums is sorted by ingredient on its own page. And if you are not sure which kind of hair loss you have, the hair and scalp guide walks through the patterns from the parting outward.

Whatever you decide, keep one habit: before a blood draw, tell the doctor and the laboratory that you take biotin, the dose, and when you last took it. That single sentence prevents the one harm from this tablet that has actually been documented, and it costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions Copy link

Is 10000 mcg biotin too much?

It is 250 times the Indian recommended intake of 40 mcg. No toxic dose of biotin has been identified and no upper intake level has been set, which is not the same as proof of safety for every person. The documented problem with 10,000 mcg is that it can make thyroid, troponin and vitamin D blood tests read falsely high or low. Tell your doctor and the lab before any blood test and follow their advice on pausing.

When should I take biotin tablets, morning or night?

Either. Biotin is absorbed with or without food, so the time of day does not change the effect. Follow the product label, and take it at a time you will remember.

Does biotin work for men with hair loss?

Biotin has not been shown to help male pattern baldness. In a 2024 crossover study, ten healthy men on 5 mg a day showed no change in hair growth while topical minoxidil produced one. In a separate study, 60 men with pattern hair loss had lower biotin than controls, but none was deficient. Minoxidil and finasteride are the treatments with controlled-trial evidence for men.

Can biotin tablets be taken during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is one of the situations where mild biotin shortage is common, and prenatal vitamins already contain a microgram dose. High-dose 5 to 10 mg tablets have no established benefit in pregnancy. They can interfere with some hormone assays and some hCG tests, including certain urine pregnancy tests, so ask your obstetrician before adding one, and tell them if you already take one.

Are biotin gummies better than tablets?

No. The blood-test interference comes from the biotin dose, not the format, so a high-dose gummy carries the same risk as a high-dose tablet. Gummies differ in their other ingredients and sweeteners, which is what the label is for.

How long does biotin stay in your system?

At microgram doses the half-life is around two hours. At high doses it stretches to nearly nineteen hours, sensitive laboratory tests can still be affected a day or more later, and reduced kidney function slows clearance further. That is why laboratories ask about your dose and timing rather than quoting one waiting period.
