How to Increase Hemoglobin: What Works, How Fast
The fastest way to increase hemoglobin is to treat whatever is keeping it low, and in India that is usually iron. Given the right iron treatment the marrow gets to work inside a week, the young red cells show up first, and hemoglobin is usually climbing by the second to fourth week, at roughly a gram per deciliter a month; the stores take months longer to refill.1 Food matters, and it is slower than most people are told.
Iron tablets bought for a low hemoglobin that turns out to be B12 deficiency, kidney disease or thalassemia trait raise nothing, so this page starts with the ten-minute step that decides which treatment works, then the treatment, then what to eat, then how long each one takes.
Start with why it is low Copy link
As you probably know, a low hemoglobin is a number, not a diagnosis. Common causes fall into a few broad groups: too little iron, B12 or folate to build red cells; blood loss; reduced red-cell production from conditions such as kidney disease or hypothyroidism; inherited haemoglobin disorders such as thalassemia; and, less commonly, increased red-cell destruction or bone-marrow disease. Each one has a different fix, and only the first responds to the tablets people reach for. If you have not yet checked your result against the interval for someone of your age and sex, or for your stage of pregnancy, the hemoglobin normal range decoder does that; this page assumes the level is low and asks what to do about it.
The test that sorts most of it is a ferritin, which measures the iron in storage. A low ferritin strongly supports iron deficiency. A normal ferritin makes it less obvious but does not always exclude it, particularly during inflammation, when ferritin rises as an acute-phase protein; transferrin saturation and inflammatory markers can clarify the picture.1 The cell size on the same CBC report points the way before the ferritin comes back: small cells point at iron deficiency or thalassemia trait, large ones at B12 or folate, ordinary-sized ones bleeding, kidney disease, inflammation or thyroid. And a relatively high RBC count despite small cells raises suspicion for thalassemia trait; iron will not correct the trait itself, although a person can have thalassemia trait and iron deficiency at the same time.
Two results earn a further question before treatment starts. Iron-deficiency anaemia in a man, or in a woman who has been through menopause, deserves investigation for the cause rather than being assumed to come from diet. Chronic gastrointestinal blood loss is an important possibility, and guidelines generally recommend evaluation of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract when appropriate. Iron treatment usually starts while that investigation proceeds.1 And iron deficiency in a woman with heavy periods needs the periods addressed too, or the tablets are refilling a bucket with a hole in it.
How to increase hemoglobin levels when iron is short Copy link
Oral iron is the treatment for iron-deficiency anemia, and it works in most people who take it correctly. For most adults, treatment starts with one standard oral iron dose no more than once daily; the British Society of Gastroenterology guideline names one tablet of ferrous sulfate, fumarate or gluconate a day, which in India usually means 60 to 100 mg of elemental iron, with a hemoglobin check within the first four weeks and treatment continued for about three months after the level is back to normal.1 The 2024 American Gastroenterological Association update says the same thing from the other direction: oral iron once a day at most, ferrous sulfate preferred because it is cheapest, and no formulation better than another.15 The national Anemia Mukt Bharat programme uses the same logic for prevention: pregnant women receive 60 mg of elemental iron with 500 µg of folic acid daily from the second trimester, for at least 180 days in pregnancy and 180 days after delivery, and adolescents and non-pregnant women aged 20 to 49 a weekly tablet of the same strength.2, 3
Every-other-day dosing is a reasonable alternative, particularly when nausea or constipation affects adherence. Absorption studies show higher fractional iron uptake with alternate-day dosing: in a Swiss trial in iron-depleted women, the same 60 mg dose taken every other day was absorbed 34% better than when taken daily (21.8% against 16.3% of the dose), because a daily dose raises hepcidin, the hormone that shuts the gut's iron gate, and it is still raised when the next tablet arrives.4 That was an absorption study, and trials comparing hemoglobin outcomes between the two schedules have found them similar, which is why guidelines offer alternate-day dosing as the better-tolerated option and daily dosing as the default.1, 15 Whichever schedule is used, taking iron more than once a day adds little and usually adds side effects; splitting a dose into morning and evening added nothing in the same trial.4 Take it on an empty stomach if you can; if that gives you nausea, taking it with a small meal loses some absorption and keeps you taking it, which matters more.
The vitamin C rule is weaker than its reputation. In a randomized trial of 440 adults with iron-deficiency anemia, adding vitamin C to oral iron raised hemoglobin by 2.00 g/dL at two weeks against 1.84 without it, a difference the trial had defined in advance as equivalent, and the gap did not open by week eight.5 The AGA update still advises adding vitamin C to oral iron, so the two positions are stated here side by side; the trial is the larger body of evidence, and a squeeze of lemon on your dal remains a fine habit for the iron in food.15
Iron by drip is for the people tablets fail, and you may be one of them: those who cannot tolerate them, whose hemoglobin has not moved after a fair trial, whose gut does not absorb (celiac disease, after bariatric surgery, inflammatory bowel disease), or who need the number up quickly, such as late in pregnancy or before surgery.1 Modern intravenous preparations replace the full deficit in one or two sittings and the hemoglobin follows on the same timetable as tablets, sometimes faster.
How to increase hemoglobin in a woman
The same treatment, with two additions. Women need more iron every day than men, 29 mg against 19 in the ICMR-NIN 2020 requirement, because of menstrual loss, and 27 mg in pregnancy.6 So a woman whose periods are heavy (a pad soaked within the hour, clots bigger than a coin) will keep sliding back after every course of tablets until the bleeding itself is treated, which is a conversation with a gynaecologist.
In pregnancy, do not wait for the number to fall. The antenatal iron and folic acid your clinic prescribes is prevention, taken daily whether or not you are anemic, and the anemia cut-offs are lower than outside pregnancy (11 g/dL in trimesters one and three, 10.5 in trimester two) because the blood dilutes as plasma expands.7, 8 A hemoglobin below those lines in pregnancy is a same-week conversation with the obstetric team. Intravenous iron may be considered when oral iron is not tolerated or is not producing an adequate response, or when faster iron repletion is clinically important; the obstetric team makes that decision.
When iron is not the cause Copy link
- B12 or folate deficiency. Frequent in vegetarian families, and a slow side effect of years on metformin or acid-suppressing tablets. Folate is replaced with a tablet. B12 depends on why it is low. Diet-related deficiency can usually be treated orally. Autoimmune gastritis and some major gastrointestinal resections require lifelong intramuscular replacement; with other forms of malabsorption, high-dose oral treatment or injections may be used depending on the cause. When deficiency is strongly suspected and there are neurological features, pins and needles, numbness, unsteadiness, NICE advises not delaying replacement, taking the diagnostic blood samples first where possible, because delay can leave persistent deficits.9 Iron given for a B12 deficiency does nothing for you.
- Kidney disease. As kidneys fail they make less erythropoietin, the marrow's instruction to make red cells. Iron is checked and replaced first, and when that is not enough the hormone itself is given by injection under the KDIGO guideline; this is specialist care, and no supplement replaces it. - An underactive thyroid. The marrow listens to thyroid hormone too, so a mild anemia often rides along with hypothyroidism, and treating the thyroid brings the hemoglobin up over months. A high TSH on the same report points there.
- Thalassemia trait. Some 4% of Indians carry it, and the carrier's hemoglobin sits a little low for life because the marrow makes small cells. Nothing raises it and nothing needs to, which surprises people, unless iron deficiency is also present, which is common and is treated on its own merits. What the diagnosis changes is family planning: when both partners carry it, each pregnancy carries a 25% chance of a child with the major form of the disease.11
- Bleeding. Haemorrhoids, an ulcer, a polyp, a fibroid. Tablets treat the consequence, and finding the source is the treatment.
What to eat when hemoglobin is low Copy link
Food is your second step, and the reason is arithmetic. A woman needs 29 mg of iron a day and absorbs perhaps 8% of what she eats, which is the figure the ICMR-NIN requirement is built on.6 A single tablet delivers 60 to 100 mg. A serving of dal delivers two or three. Diet keeps your normal hemoglobin normal and slowly rebuilds stores once tablets have done the heavy lifting; on its own it corrects an established anemia over many months, if at all. Eat the foods below, and take the tablet. Of course, that is the opposite order to the one you have been given.
The iron that counts is in pulses, millets, seeds and greens for most Indian kitchens, and in meat, liver, fish and eggs for those who eat them. Meat, liver, fish and shellfish provide heme iron, which is generally absorbed more efficiently than plant non-heme iron; eggs contain iron too, but it is not predominantly heme iron.

Two beliefs you will have heard at home deserve a number. Jaggery has iron, and a teaspoon of it delivers a fifth of a milligram, so the ladoo is a pleasure, and it will not treat you. Beetroot and pomegranate are red because of pigments, and neither is a meaningful iron source. The foods that move the needle in a vegetarian kitchen are whole dals and chana eaten daily rather than as a Sunday dish, bajra and ragi in place of some of the rice or wheat, a spoon of til or halim, and green leafy vegetables, whose iron is real even if spinach's is poorly absorbed because of oxalates.
Getting the iron in Copy link
What you drink with the meal matters more than what you sprinkle on it. Black tea taken with an iron-containing meal cut its absorption by 79 to 94% in radio-iron studies, coffee and cocoa by more than half, and adding milk to the tea changed nothing.13 Leaving an hour between the meal and the cup roughly halves the effect.14 If you take your iron tablet with your morning chai, you are taking most of a tablet for nothing, and it is one of the commonest reasons a course of iron does not work.
Vitamin C helps the iron in food. Foods rich in it, eaten in the same meal as plant iron, improve how much of that non-heme iron gets through, which is why the ICMR-NIN requirement assumes a diet carrying at least 20 mg of vitamin C per 1,000 kcal: lemon on the dal, tomato in the sabzi, amla or guava after the meal.6 For the tablet itself, as the trial above showed, it is optional.
How fast it rises Copy link
Iron deficiency corrected with iron follows a timetable that you can check against. In the first week, nothing you can feel. By day seven to ten the reticulocyte count, the young red cells, is up, which is the earliest sign the marrow has iron again. By week two to four the hemoglobin has usually risen a gram, and the tiredness has started to lift. Most people are back inside their lab's range by two to three months, and the tablets continue about three months beyond that to rebuild the ferritin.1 A repeat CBC at four weeks confirms the direction, and ferritin can be rechecked when confirming that the stores have refilled is clinically useful; the guideline does not make an end-of-treatment ferritin routine for everyone.1 A CBC and ferritin can be collected during the same blood draw, although the laboratory usually uses separate tubes, and a full body checkup usually carries both, so check the list before booking a separate test.
When it does not rise Copy link
A hemoglobin that has not risen by a gram after four weeks of iron is a finding, and it is rarely your fault. The reasons, roughly in order: the tablets were taken with tea, milk or food that blocked them; the tablets were not taken, because the side effects were real and nobody said alternate-day dosing was allowed; the bleeding is faster than the tablets, a period or a gut source that was never addressed; the gut is not absorbing, which is often celiac disease and a reason for a drip; the diagnosis was wrong, and this is B12, thyroid, kidney or trait; or inflammation is holding the iron hostage. Each of those is a different next test. Frankly, none of them is a bigger dose of the same tablet.1
See a doctor this week rather than at the next check-up if the level is under 8 g/dL, if you are pregnant and below the trimester cut-off, or if the number has fallen despite treatment. How can I increase my hemoglobin quickly?
A CBC plus ferritin identifies iron deficiency in many cases, and some results need further testing; then treat the cause. For iron deficiency, the way to increase hemoglobin level in blood is oral iron once daily or every other day, depending on the prescribed regimen and what you tolerate, on an empty stomach and away from tea; the hemoglobin rises about a gram in the first month. Nothing raises it in days except a transfusion, which is reserved for severe anemia in hospital.
How much can hemoglobin rise in a week?
Very little in the first week; the marrow spends it making new cells that have not yet reached the blood. A measurable rise, around half a gram to a gram, shows by the second to fourth week of correct treatment.
How to increase hemoglobin count, or improve hemoglobin, on a vegetarian diet?
Whole dals and chana daily, bajra or ragi in place of some rice, til or halim seeds, green leafy vegetables, all with a vitamin C food in the same meal and no tea for an hour either side. That maintains a normal level and rebuilds stores slowly; an established anemia still needs tablets, and a vegetarian with a low hemoglobin should have B12 checked too.
Does jaggery increase hemoglobin?
Not in the amounts anyone eats. Jaggery carries about 4.6 mg of iron per 100 g, so a teaspoon delivers a fifth of a milligram against a daily need of 19 to 29 mg. Enjoy it; do not count on it.
How can I check hemoglobin at home?
Portable finger-prick meters exist and are what the national programme uses in the field, but they read some tenths of a gram away from a lab analyzer and vary with how hard the finger is squeezed. Fine for a rough trend; a treatment decision rests on a venous sample from one lab.
Tablets or a drip: which is faster?
A drip replaces the whole deficit in one or two sittings and the hemoglobin follows on a similar timetable to tablets, sometimes a little faster. It is chosen when tablets are not tolerated or absorbed, when the level has not moved after a fair trial, or when time is short, as in late pregnancy or before surgery.
How long should I take iron tablets?
Until the hemoglobin is normal, then about three months more to refill the stores; a ferritin at the end is useful when there is a reason to confirm repletion, and your doctor decides. Stopping the day the tiredness lifts is why the anemia comes back the following year.
Can I take iron tablets without a test?
You can, and that is how thalassemia carriers spend years on iron that does nothing, how B12 deficiency goes unnoticed while it damages nerves, and how an ulcer bleeds on unseen behind the tablets. A ferritin costs less than a month of tablets.
Will iron tablets increase hemoglobin in pregnancy?
Yes, when the cause is iron deficiency, which it usually is; the daily antenatal iron and folic acid is prescribed for exactly that reason. If the level is below the trimester cut-off despite taking them, or time is short, the obstetric team may move to a drip.
