Rybelsus Tablet: Uses, 3 mg, 7 mg & 14 mg Dose, Price in India
Rybelsus is a once-daily tablet of semaglutide, licensed in India for adults with type 2 diabetes.1 It comes in 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg strengths. You take it on an empty stomach with up to 120 mL of water, then wait 30 minutes.2 A strip of 10 lists at ₹2,972 to ₹3,628.3
What is Rybelsus tablet used for? Copy link
Rybelsus lowers blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise.2 It belongs to the GLP-1 medicines, which copy a gut hormone that tells the pancreas to release insulin when sugar is high. It also slows the stomach and reduces appetite.
Novo Nordisk has sold it in India since January 2022, for type 2 diabetes.1 It is not a treatment for type 1 diabetes. It does not hold a weight-loss license here either. In India that license belongs to Wegovy, an injection of the same molecule.
The US label added a second use in October 2025. It covers adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk of heart disease. In them, the tablet is approved there to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death.4 Check your own pack insert for what the Indian license covers.
Rybelsus 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg: what does each dose do? Copy link
Rybelsus dosing is a staircase of three strengths. You start at 3 mg for 30 days, move to 7 mg, and go to 14 mg only if your sugar still needs it.2 Plainly, 3 mg is there to let your stomach adjust.
The label says the 3 mg dose "is not effective for glycemic control".2 The trial behind it is slightly kinder. PIONEER 1 was a 26-week study of 703 adults. In it, 3 mg lowered HbA1c by 0.6 points more than placebo. The weight difference was 0.1 kg and could have been chance (p=0.87).5 Have you been on 3 mg for months with numbers that have barely moved? Ask your doctor whether you were meant to step up.
| Dose | When | HbA1c at 26 weeks | Weight at 26 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mg | Days 1 to 30 | Starter dose, no label claim | No clear change |
| 7 mg | From day 31 | −1.2 points | −2.3 kg |
| 14 mg | From day 61, if needed | −1.4 points | −3.7 kg |
| Placebo | −0.3 points | −1.4 kg |
Those 7 mg and 14 mg figures come from the label's monotherapy trial. People in it started at an HbA1c of about 8% and a weight near 88 kg.2 On 7 mg, 69% reached an HbA1c under 7%. On 14 mg, 77% did, against 31% on placebo. The level in your blood settles after four to five weeks at a dose, which is why each step lasts at least a month.
How do you take Rybelsus? Copy link
Take one tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, with up to 120 mL of plain water, which is about half a glass. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else or take other medicines.2
- Take it first thing after waking, before food or drink
- Use plain water only, no more than 120 mL
- Swallow the tablet whole, without splitting, crushing or chewing it
- Wait at least 30 minutes before breakfast, tea, coffee or any other tablet
- Keep the same routine every day, since the dose depends on it
Why so strict? Semaglutide is a peptide, a small protein, and the gut digests proteins. Each tablet carries 300 mg of a helper compound called SNAC that shields the drug and opens a brief path through the stomach wall.6 Even then, only about 0.4% to 1% of the semaglutide reaches your blood.2
That thin margin is easy to lose. In volunteers who had eaten, little or no drug was measurable in the blood.6 More water is not better either, because absorption was higher with 50 mL than with 240 mL.2 Tea, coffee, milk and juice all count as "other liquids", so keep them for after the wait.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one the following morning.2 Do not double up. Store the strip below 30°C and leave each tablet in its blister until you take it, because moisture damages it.37
Do you take levothyroxine, the thyroid tablet? It also wants an empty stomach, and that creates a queue. In one study, taking the two together raised thyroxine exposure by 33%.2 Tell your doctor you take both, and ask whether your thyroid level should be rechecked after you start.
What is the Rybelsus price in India? Copy link
Rybelsus lists at ₹2,972 for ten 3 mg tablets, ₹3,300 for 7 mg and ₹3,628 for 14 mg, as of October 2026.3 You take one a day, so a month is three strips. The 3 mg price applies to the first 30 days only. After that you pay the 7 mg or 14 mg price for as long as you stay on the tablet. Online pharmacies usually sell a little below the listed price.
| Strength | MRP, strip of 10 | Per tablet | 30 tablets | Obeda tablets, 30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mg | ₹2,972 | ₹297 | ₹8,916 | ₹2,970 |
| 7 mg | ₹3,300 | ₹330 | ₹9,900 | ₹4,050 |
| 14 mg | ₹3,628 | ₹363 | ₹10,884 | ₹6,750 |
Generic semaglutide reached Indian pharmacies in March 2026, and the tablet followed. Torrent launched Semalix on 21 March 2026.8 Dr Reddy's launched Obeda tablets in May 2026 for type 2 diabetes, at ₹99, ₹135 and ₹225 a tablet for the three strengths.9 Semalix lists at ₹1,090 for ten 3 mg tablets.7 The Indian semaglutide brands are worth comparing before you refill.
Rybelsus itself has not become cheaper. When Novo Nordisk cut its injection prices on 31 March 2026, the company told Business Standard it planned no similar move for Rybelsus.10 The starting dose of Ozempic, the weekly injection, fell to ₹5,660 a month in that cut. A month of Rybelsus 3 mg costs ₹8,916. So among the branded products, the tablet is no longer the cheaper way into semaglutide. The cheapest route of all is an Indian generic tablet. Obeda 3 mg costs ₹2,970 for the first month, and that is the starter dose, not the treatment dose. On a maintenance dose the gap holds: Obeda 7 mg is ₹4,050 a month against ₹9,900 for Rybelsus 7 mg, and Obeda 14 mg is ₹6,750 against ₹10,884.
Does Rybelsus work for weight loss? Copy link
Rybelsus produces modest weight loss, about 2 to 4 kg over six months at 7 mg and 14 mg. In the label's 26-week trial, people lost 2.3 kg on 7 mg and 3.7 kg on 14 mg, against 1.4 kg on placebo.2 They started near 88 kg, so 14 mg took off roughly 4% of body weight.
Only the 14 mg result is firmly established. In the trial's main analysis, the extra loss over placebo was 2.3 kg at 14 mg (p<0.001). At 7 mg it was 0.9 kg, which did not reach statistical significance (p=0.09).5 Treat 7 mg as a sugar dose that may trim weight, and 14 mg as the dose with a measured weight effect.
You may have seen far larger numbers attached to "the semaglutide pill". They belong to a different tablet. In the OASIS 4 trial, adults without diabetes took 25 mg a day for 64 weeks. They lost about 14% of their weight, against about 2% on placebo.11 The US regulator approved that 25 mg tablet as the Wegovy pill in December 2025.12 Novo Nordisk said at the time that an India launch depended on approvals, and gave no date.13 Business reports in October 2026 put a possible Indian launch of the oral obesity tablets from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly in 2027, subject to regulatory approval.14 Until one arrives, every semaglutide tablet sold in India is a diabetes product.
So the pharmacy shelf in India stops at 14 mg, which is a diabetes dose. One Indian clinic series reported a 6 kg loss at six months in 60 patients with poorly controlled diabetes.15 It was retrospective and had no comparison group, so read it as a signal and no more. If weight is your main goal, the wider choice of weight-loss treatments in India deserves a look with your doctor.
Rybelsus vs Ozempic: tablet or injection? Copy link
Rybelsus and Ozempic contain the same molecule, semaglutide. Rybelsus is a tablet you take every morning. Ozempic is an injection you take once a week. No large trial has put the two head to head, so compare them on routine, cost and what your doctor is treating.
| Rybelsus | Ozempic | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Tablet, every morning | Injection, once a week |
| Rule to follow | Empty stomach, then a 30-minute wait | Same day each week |
| First month in India, starter dose | ₹8,916 (3 mg) | ₹5,660 (0.25 mg) |
| Licensed in India for | Type 2 diabetes | Type 2 diabetes |
The tablet suits you if needles are the barrier and your mornings are predictable. The injection suits you if a fixed 30-minute fast every day sounds hard to keep. Switching is a prescriber's decision, with the new dose set by the doctor. The US label lets someone on Ozempic 0.5 mg start Rybelsus 7 mg or 14 mg one week after the last injection.2 That is a US instruction. The Indian pack insert may word it differently, so do not change form on your own.
What are the side effects of Rybelsus? Copy link
Nausea is the most common side effect of Rybelsus. In placebo-controlled trials it affected 11% of people on 7 mg and 20% on 14 mg, against 6% on placebo.2 The label lists the rest in the same order, 7 mg then 14 mg then placebo:
- Stomach pain in 10%, 11% and 4%
- Diarrhea in 9%, 10% and 4%
- Reduced appetite in 6%, 9% and 1%
- Vomiting in 6%, 8% and 3%
- Constipation in 6%, 5% and 2%
These effects cluster around the start and each dose step, as you would expect from a drug that slows the stomach.
About 4% of people on 7 mg and 8% on 14 mg stopped the tablet because of stomach side effects.2 The pattern across GLP-1 side effects is similar for the injections.
Low blood sugar is uncommon when Rybelsus is taken alone. The risk rises if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea such as glimepiride, and your doctor may lower those doses.2 The label also warns about pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and kidney injury from dehydration. One more deserves a sentence. A fast fall in blood sugar can temporarily worsen diabetic retinopathy, the eye damage of long-standing diabetes.2 If you already have it, ask for an eye check when you start.
Who should not take Rybelsus? Copy link
Do not take Rybelsus if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer. The same applies if you have multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, a rare inherited tumor syndrome.2 The warning comes from thyroid tumors seen in rodents. Whether the same happens in people is unknown.
The label adds several situations where the tablet is stopped or avoided:2
- Pregnancy, with the tablet stopped at least two months before you plan to conceive
- Breastfeeding, because the helper compound SNAC may build up in the infant
- Childhood, since safety under 18 has not been established
- A previous serious allergic reaction to semaglutide
- Severe gastroparesis, a stomach that already empties very slowly, in which the tablet is not recommended
No dose change is needed for kidney or liver disease. The kidney caution is dehydration. The label reports kidney injury, some needing dialysis, in people who lost fluid through vomiting or diarrhea.2 Keep drinking, and get help early if you cannot keep fluids down. If you are booked for surgery under anesthesia, tell the team you take it, since a slow stomach can still hold food.
Does Rybelsus protect the heart? Copy link
In people with type 2 diabetes who already have heart, vessel or kidney disease, yes, by a measured amount. The SOUL trial followed 9,650 such adults for about four years. A heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death occurred in 12.0% of those on oral semaglutide and 13.8% on placebo, a 14% lower relative risk.16
That is about two fewer events for every 100 people treated for four years. Everyone in SOUL was 50 or older and at high risk, and the target dose was 14 mg. The result does not tell you what happens in a 35-year-old with new diabetes and a healthy heart. The trial was funded by the manufacturer.
What are Ozempic tablets, and do they change anything in India? Copy link
Ozempic tablets are a US product, and India does not have them. In India, Ozempic means the weekly injection. In the US, the name now also covers a newer oral formulation of semaglutide in 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg strengths. The US label revised in January 2026 lists them beside Rybelsus.2 More of each tablet is absorbed, about 1% to 2%, so the milligram numbers are smaller. Rybelsus 7 mg corresponds to 4 mg, and 14 mg to 9 mg.
The two are not interchangeable milligram for milligram. Indian pharmacy listings in October 2026 show Rybelsus in 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg only.3 No Indian approval of the US tablet has been announced. If a relative carries tablets home from abroad, check the strength printed on the pack against your prescription before you take one.
Frequently asked questions Copy link
Is Rybelsus the same as Ozempic?
Rybelsus and Ozempic both contain semaglutide. Rybelsus is a daily tablet in 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg strengths. Ozempic is a weekly injection. Both are licensed in India for type 2 diabetes. They are dosed differently, so one cannot be swapped for the other without a doctor setting the new dose.
Can I take Rybelsus with tea or coffee?
No. Take Rybelsus with up to 120 mL of plain water only, then wait at least 30 minutes before tea, coffee, milk, food or other medicines. Other liquids and food in the stomach reduce how much semaglutide is absorbed, and very little is absorbed to begin with.
What is Rybelsus 3 mg used for?
Rybelsus 3 mg is the starter dose, taken once a day for the first 30 days so the stomach can adjust. The label states it is not effective for blood sugar control. After 30 days the dose normally rises to 7 mg, which is the first treatment dose.
Is there a generic Rybelsus in India?
Yes. Generic semaglutide reached India in March 2026, and Indian companies now sell semaglutide tablets in the same 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg strengths. Dr Reddy's Obeda tablets launched in May 2026 at ₹99 to ₹225 a tablet, for type 2 diabetes.
How long does Rybelsus take to work?
Blood levels of semaglutide settle after four to five weeks at a given dose. The first 30 days on 3 mg are a starter phase. In trials, the full fall in HbA1c on 7 mg or 14 mg was measured at 26 weeks, so judge the tablet over months.
Can you take Rybelsus without diabetes?
Rybelsus is licensed in India for type 2 diabetes only. A doctor may prescribe a medicine outside its license. The larger weight-loss results for oral semaglutide come from a 25 mg tablet, though, and Rybelsus stops at 14 mg. At 14 mg, trial weight loss was 3.7 kg over 26 weeks.
When to see a doctor Copy link
Not every warning sign on the label carries the same urgency. Three levels cover them.2
Go to an emergency department now, or call for an ambulance, if you have difficulty breathing or swelling of the tongue, lips or throat. These can be a severe allergic reaction, which the label lists as a reason to stop the tablet for good. Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes is also an emergency, whatever the cause, and so is a collapse.
Get seen the same day for severe stomach pain that does not ease. Pain that reaches your back or comes with vomiting can mean pancreatitis. The same applies if vomiting or diarrhea stops you keeping fluids down, since the kidneys can be injured by dehydration. New blurring or floaters that come on over days belong here too, given the retinopathy warning.
Book a prompt appointment with the doctor who prescribed it for any of these:
- A new lump or swelling in the neck, trouble swallowing, or a hoarse voice that persists
- Repeated low blood sugar, particularly on insulin or a sulfonylurea
- Nausea that is stopping you eating
- Finding out you are pregnant, so the prescriber can decide how your diabetes is managed from there
